A little of this and that

A glimpse of Philadelphia.

These are pregnant times throughout the world. Just as in geology we have breaking lines between huge blocks of earth, so today we are at the juncture between great blocks of time. This is the place of storm and volcano – and of becoming. In today’s reality, a small act can have far-reaching consequences, beyond imagination, whereas things that will be done five or ten years from today will be so much less effective. This is precisely the meaning of pregnant times: Anything can be born. And this is exactly the time when one must not sleep.

~ Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, Parabola

A glimpse of the ocean.

I feel off-kilter when it comes to blogging lately.  I don’t know what to write about.  Maybe it’s always been that way?  I know I’ve started many a post with something along the lines of “I’ll just begin writing and see where this goes.”  I wonder if what keeps me from blogging is the same thing that blocks me when I try to write a letter or a postcard or a comment on other blog posts.  The words just don’t want to come.  I have to tug and pull at them, using all of my mental strength to gather enough words to make a sentence or two.

At 23rd Street, near one end of the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD.

I feel passive.  No, that’s not the correct word.  Receptive.  I want to receive rather than transmit.  I have been gobbling up words in books or magazines or online.  I’ve been watching movies, documentaries, television, and listening to talks online.  Sometimes I sit by the pond, on the dock, or in the woods, and just watch, listen, absorb, wait.  I have no idea what I’m waiting for.

Looking for a sign.

Yesterday I went out to the porch and sat in the sun for a while.  I heard a couple of Bald Eagles chattering and looked up.  One of them dropped a stick on the deck.  An accident?  A gift?  A wake up call?  I was grateful that my head didn’t get bonked.  The stick hit the deck pretty hard.  The eagles should have their nests built by now.  In fact, they should have eggs and be tending their nests.  Perhaps these two were a little late to the nesting party.  Or they just needed to make a few repairs.

The other way.

There’s an Octavia Butler quote going around on the internets.  It’s a good one.

Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.

Food for thought now that Cadet Bone Spurs is in the White House.

Blocking the view.

I reckon that’s enough randomness from me for today.  Thank you for stopping by.  I think we should head out to the Point for sunset this evening.  The high clouds might give us a good show of color.  Sunset is scheduled for 5:36 PM.  I’ll meet you there about ten or fifteen minutes before that.  It shouldn’t be too bad out there.  The temperature is almost 50°F and the winds are relatively calm for a change.

Be good, be kind, be loving.  Just Be.  🙂

The boardwalk in winter.

A few of the 10,000 reasons to be happy:  551)  Walks on the boardwalk.  552)  Bald Eagles leaving gifts, even the unintentional.  553)  Things returning home when they get lost.  554)  The warmth of the porch on a sunny day.  555)  The Winter Olympics.  I’m looking forward to watching.

  1. Sometimes sitting in the sun is exactly what is needed. And the eagle? Well you know how it goes, once you own a house there’s always something that needs fixing.

I’m discouraged with the state of things too. Can barely stand to watch TV. Today was particularly bad. Don’t think I’ll turn it on tomorrow.

We got about 6 or 7 inches of snow and it’s still coming down. So today we were in the house all day which is OK given we’re still trying to get it ready for paint. Painters are supposed to come Monday…now husband thinks he has some large project that may delay their start. I just stared at him and walked away. SO ticked off, I think he needs to get whatever it is done prior to Monday.

    1. LOL, Dawn! Yes, the joys of home-ownership. 🙂 I don’t watch much TV these days. Or at least not much in the way of news.
I know that stare! I’ve used it many times. My husband is the same way about starting large projects at inopportune times. For example, we were getting ready to hold a big graduation party for one of his graduate students whose family had to come in from out of state, and while I could have used some assistance doing the million-and-one things I needed to do, he decided (three days before the party) to build a patio. That particular project is now a joke between us, but I didn’t find it funny at the time. Oddly enough, though, everything got done (including the patio).

  2. I’ve been freezing all day. I’m waiting for your 50 degrees to come further north.

Sometimes you need to take in more so then you have more to give. Just go with it. 🙂

  3. To be receptive also implies you are also processing … and I imagine you are doing that! Hang in there. LOVE the treatment on the first series of images … and the Octavia Butler quote is perfect … well, sad to say.

  4. Haha, my first thought reading the first quote was…yeah, between a rock and a hard place. I loved Eliza’s response about the eagles, and dawnkinster saying there is always something needing fixing when you own a house. It is such a hard time right now. I’m reading Hillary’s newest book right now. As much as I love reading it, it is hard not to be sad about what almost was….and what we have now. Loved the Octavia Butler quote. Thanks for this authentic post. We are all in this together. Buckle down or buckle up. I don’t know which…or both. Love all your photos as always, Robin.
    Peace
    Mary

    1. Probably both, Mary. 🙂 I read about half of Hillary’s book and then had to return it to the library (it was on a waiting list and I didn’t want to hold up others who were waiting to read it). I should check and see if it’s available again.

  5. Love the Octavia Butler quote. How sad that it is so true about the USA.
Mild but RAINY here with flood watch. My front yard is already flooded.
    Hope Punx Phil was wrong!

    1. Looks like that rain is headed our way soon, Jane. We’re pretty well saturated here, too. Phil might have been right. Cold weather is following that rain. I can’t believe how warm it is today!

  6. Hi Robin. I have just two words for you – Morning Pages.
I bought “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron about a week ago and when I read about morning pages I was reminded that it was through you I’d heard that unloading whatever it is causing writer’s block (discontentment, feeling off-kilter, or whatever) into three pages of pen-and-paper writing each morning will change your world. Just think of the blasting you could give employees currently stationed in the White House! 😉
You should accept the stick dropped by the bald eagles as a gift, I think. Much nicer than the thought that they were out to get you! Some meat I’d left out for the birds yesterday was replaced by a pile of red berries. 🙂
