1. Fifty-nine

Birthday gift from M.

Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom. Think of love as a state of grace, not the means to anything, but the alpha and omega. An end in itself.

~ Gabriel García Márquez, Love in the Time of Cholera

Age 59

Today is the 341st day of the year.  According to Wikipedia, December 7th is “slightly more likely to fall on a Monday, Wednesday, or Friday (58 in 400 years) than on Saturday or Sunday (57), and slightly less likely to occur on a Tuesday or Thursday (56).”  I guess that makes this a slightly special year since today happens to be a Thursday.

Breakfast appetizer.

Today is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day here in the U.S.  It’s also my birthday, and the start of my year-long Early Mornings challenge.

A few leaves left on one of the blueberry bushes in the rain garden.

I was up in time for sunrise this morning, and before opening up the wonderful gifts that M gave me, I did my morning sadhana (practice).  The gifts, in case you’re wondering, are the Alex & Ani bracelets shown in the first photo and the new lens for my camera that was used to take the images I’m using in this post.  Except for the selfie.  I used my phone camera for that.  It’s much easier than setting up a tripod.

Purple coneflower gone to seed.

The new lens is going to take a little getting used to, but I can already tell I will like it for certain things, particularly macro photography.  It has already inspired me to get out and play (or stay in and play, photographing the bracelets and the grapefruit).

On the forest floor.

I am going to have to keep this short today because I’m off to the beach to spend the day by the ocean and to visit with the wild horses on Assateague Island.  It’s a fairly new birthday tradition, but one I love.

Thank you so much for visiting with me on my birthday.  It’s wonderful to have friends stop by on special days.

A little tilt.

Be good, be kind, be loving.  Just Be.  🙂

Still pretty.

  1. Well, more good photography and lots of fun with a new lens. Best wishes on your birthday. It’s true, our minds stay the same. When I am with someone I was a girl with, I am still that girl, with loads of added experience. It’s funny, isn’t it, how we are who we are? I’m a year ahead of you!

    1. It’s very funny, Lisa. Adulthood isn’t at all what I thought it would be when I was a girl, and yet it isn’t much different than being a girl (other than the fact that I can get into much more trouble..lol!).
      Thank you. 🙂

      1. It’s funny. I think that’s only something you know if you realize the essential for of yourself never changes. An old friend of mine will be visiting in a couple months, and because we were girls together, I still think of us that way. Even if we’re adults with a lot of changes behind us.

  4. Happy belated birthday, young lady! You look fabulous in your selfie. My youngest son also shares your birthday, so we’ve had a couple of celebrations here. I love your new bracelets, and what fun to have a new lens. That quote by Gabriel García Márquez is wonderful. How I adored Love in the Time of Cholera. I should revisit it. I hope you enjoy your new birthday tradition of going to Assateague. I’m heading to the shore today myself, to Cape May. I haven’t been there in years and I love the beach off-season. It’s supposed to be quite blustery. 🙂

    1. Thank you, Cathy. 🙂 Would you believe I’ve never been to Cape May?? I grew up in NJ and can’t remember ever being there. Or maybe I just don’t remember it. M and I keep saying we’re going to take our bicycles, catch the Lewes ferry, and ride our bikes to Cape May. I think I’ll move that up on our list of things to do, and make a goal of doing it in 2018.

      1. It’s hard to believe you’ve never been to Cape May, Robin. You should go! I loved it so much. It was icy cold and very blustery – my fingers and toes and cheeks were stinging the whole time – but it was so charming and there is so much to see. I had been before, when my boys were very little, but all we did was sit on the beach watching them dig holes in the sand. I wanted to go back by myself and do the adult things! I think the plan to take your bikes and the Lewes ferry sounds like a good one. I highly recommend the walking trails at Cape May Point State Park. I love that kind of landscape, much like Chincoteague and Assateague, but then of course you have the delightful Victorian houses in town as well. I’ll write about it sometime soon, I hope. Next stop, Nashville! I’ve never been there either. 🙂
