If we were having coffee: Making waves

february-2017c-033a

The waves broke and spread their waters swiftly over the shore. One after another they massed themselves and fell; the spray tossed itself back with the energy of their fall. The waves were steeped deep-blue save for a pattern of diamond-pointed light on their backs which rippled as the backs of great horses ripple with muscles as they move. The waves fell; withdrew and fell again, like the thud of a great beast stamping.

If we were having coffee, I would welcome you back with open arms.  It’s so great to see you again!  Come on in.  It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?  The wind has finally calmed down a bit, the sun is shining, and they say it will be near 60°F today.

I have the usual assortment of coffee and teas.  Hot chocolate or hot cider are a possibility too, if you’d like.  Nothing has changed in the world of snacks around here.  Hummus, pita, vegetables, salsa, and beet borani are available.  I bet M has some potato chips and pretzels stashed away somewhere, too, if you’d rather have those.  Are you craving something sweet?  Have a chocolate.  M brought me some for Valentine’s Day and I will gladly share.

Let’s take our drinks and snacks out to the porch where we can soak in some sunlight.  We have had so many grey days this winter that I don’t want to miss the opportunity to give my body what it needs to manufacture some vitamin D.  It’s nice and warm out there, too.  I hope you don’t mind if Izzy and Bella, our resident diva cats, join us.  I’m pretty sure they believe the porch is their territory on sunny days.  You might not see Izzy at first.  It takes her a while to work up the nerve to say hello.  Bella, on the other hand, is sweet and welcoming and maybe a little too friendly, especially if you’re the type of person who isn’t comfortable with cats.  Somehow or another, cats hone in on the person who likes them least, plopping themselves on their lap.  I don’t know why that is.  Do you?

How are you?  How has your week been?  Have you traveled anywhere?  Gone on any big or small adventures?  Have you spent time with family or friends?  Have you gone on any good walks or hikes?  Read any good books or seen any good films?

I have nothing new to report in the book department.  It is taking me forever to read Neal Stephenson’s The Diamond Age: Or, A Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer.  To give myself a bit of credit, it IS a long book.  499 pages long.  I wouldn’t describe it as a fast read, either.  I am still enjoying the story itself even if it does take me a while to work my way through it.  I am curious about the main character, Nell, and where the book (the primer) will lead her.

As for films, I recently watched Benny and Joon.  I know.  It’s an old movie.  Not old-old, of course, as in silent or black and white films.  It’s from 1993 and somehow I missed it back in the 90’s.  I missed a lot in the 80’s and 90’s.  I was busy working and raising children and doing all the things you do when you are in your 30’s and 40’s.  Anyway.  I liked the movie, and thought Mary Stuart Masterson and Johnny Depp were wonderful in it.  Tonight M and I will be watching Janis: Little Girl Blue, a 2015 documentary about Janis Joplin.

If we were having coffee, tea, or something else to drink, I would tell you that the quote I started with is perfectly perfect in describing the waves we’ve been experiencing out on the Sound this week.  Strong winds have been whipping and frothing the water, wave after wave crashing to shore and carrying parts of the beach back with it.  It was only a little over a month ago that the beach at the Point had been built up by sand carried in.  This week’s waves have been eroding the shoreline, and the places where I usually walk and stand have been disappearing.  Mother Nature giveth, and Mother Nature taketh away and maybe she will giveth once again with the next round of wind and waves.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that the Coast Guard’s Boating Skills and Seamanship Exam was this week and I passed.  Yay!  I scored an 86 which isn’t fantastic, but it’s good enough.  I missed seven questions and at least five of those were wrong because I second guessed myself.  Sometimes (most times, perhaps) it’s better to go with my instincts rather than sit and think things out.  We still have a few more weeks of classes.  Now that the exam is out of the way, the rest will be fun stuff.

Rough water.

If we were having coffee, tea, or some other beverage, I would tell you that I went to the boat show in Ocean City yesterday just to have a gander at the boats I can’t afford.  I saw a lot of pretty boats, and it was nice to be informed enough to know what questions to ask.  M and I will have to buy a used boat if we buy one, but having a look at the new boats gave me some ideas about pricing and what it is we want in a boat, if we should happen to buy one.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I couldn’t go to Ocean City and not take a walk on the beach and visit with the ocean.  It was a beautiful day, and Mother Ocean was calm.  That was a pleasant change from the rough waters we’ve had most of the week.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that M and I had dinner in Ocean City last night at Bourbon Street on the Beach.  It didn’t look like much from the outside, but I have learned it is never a good idea to judge a restaurant by the outside.  Bit like judging a book by its cover, isn’t it?  As it turned out, it was lovely inside.  The food was great, and the staff and owners were wonderful.  If you find yourself in Ocean City, Maryland someday, I highly recommend you stop by and give them try.

If we were having coffee, tea, or something else to drink, I would tell you that we are almost finished with the Great Bathroom Renovation.  I’ve been taking pictures and will show you all about it soon.

The water was crystal clear.

If we were having coffee, it would be time to turn this over to you.  There is more I could ramble on about, including some thoughts on our current political climate and how I think it’s time we start ignoring the man at the top.  We’re only feeding a massive ego and we’ve long known that he considers all publicity to be good publicity.  Better to start looking at what the rest of the government is doing, starting at a local level and working our way up to Washington, D.C.

Make phone calls, attend marches and rallies and town halls, write letters, send postcards, and make sure your voice is heard.  Practice your art.  I’ve come to the conclusion that my art is showing you the beauty of everyday nature.  My art may not be much, but maybe it will be enough to convince others that this beauty is worth saving.

Would have been a good day for swimming if the water wasn't so cold.

Thank you for stopping by for another coffee chat.  Feel free to stay a while and relax on the porch.  Or we could go for a walk.  Later, we can head over to the Point for sunset which is scheduled for 5:45 PM.

Be good, be kind, be loving.  Just Be.  🙂

This post is in response to #WeekendCoffeeShare which now has a new home.  Thank you to Nerd In The Brain for taking on the job of hosting it, and to Diana for starting it. Put the kettle on, start the coffee maker, open a bottle of wine, or whatever your preference is, and join us.  I’d love to hear all about what you were up to this week.

  1. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! You get waves, we get heaps of snow! But the sun is shining brightly, which is melting said snow (perfect to make a snowman) but it is soooo heavy to shovel!
    Enjoy your week!

  2. I am longing for walks on a beach and the sounds of waves – but that’s over the mountains for me, and the mountains are getting more snow, which makes for slippery roads – not my idea of a good time to travel.
Cats do what cats do – that is, sit on the laps of those who would prefer they not – because they can. I had a Great Dane once that would do the same thing – my husband’s grandmother hated animals, and every time she came over, he’d back up to her and plop himself in her lap. I kept my laughter inside and to myself.
Ignore the man on top – you are right about attention feeding his ego, but I’m drawn in and cannot ignore. The passion I thought had mellowed has surfaced again, and it seems impossible for me to maintain silence. I know my Congressmen are on the same side I am – well, all but one and I think there is no hope for him, but I contact them anyway. I sign online petitions, not certain that they have any real effect, but at least I’m trying. I am not in an area where there are groups who gather together to oppose, to march, to speak out as a unified group. I spend way too much time on Facebook, reading news, watching news.
When spring comes I will get outside, perhaps that will help.

  3. A wonderful post, Robin. Such a nice stroll into territory that I haven’t seen in quite a few years. Your pictures make it better than I ever experienced. I enjoy these so very much. So welcoming. Thank you for that. 💕

  4. Rough water with all that wind. The ocean looked much friendlier. Green sky at sunset? Don’t think I’ve ever seen that in person – must have been wonderful!
I agree with you that we have to start with ourselves and work on out from there. Gratitude for every single thing, no matter how small, sends out a wave of goodness. In time, you’ll create a tsunami. 🙂
    Have a good week, Robin!

    1. Thank you, Eliza. 🙂 I’ve never seen a green sky like that before. It was strange and wonderful. A gratitude tsunami sounds like something the world could use right now. ♥

  5. Ooh, a sunny day, coffee in the porch and a cat on my lap… How wonderful. 😊

I’m looking forward to the great bathroom renovation. We’ve been just sprucing things up here, trying to live life in a showhome situation so we can get ready for a viewing at the drop of a hat.
We’ve had seven viewings in the first week but no firm offers have materialised as yet.
The next two weekends are empty so we can shoot off to Weymouth and put an offer on one there. Were watching closely online and my favourite is still available , but Hubby’s favourite has-been sold. Still, Monday is the start of another week and it does seem to be the selling season again, maybe there will be more on offer by the time we get there.
I’ll soak up a little more sun here with you then I must be off. Catch you again next weekend maybe, maybe I’ll drop by from Weymouth. 😊

  6. Morning mmmphle (still need tea)
I watched Labyrinth of Lies the week after I watched Denial. I had no idea when i chose it, what the subject of the movie was. I think it was fantastic! I am finishing books, for some reason I am reading a LOT of them at one time. I got some new ones, read to page 30 and thought I am NOT wasting my time, and I took them back to the library! Feeling, noticing, and acting up on wasting y time is a theme for me these last two weeks. I am not yet sure if it is a good thing, or something else. I have not ever seen the ocean look muddy! I wonder what caused that on the first group of wave images!

    1. lol, Elisa! I mmmphle too in the mornings before my tea. I’ll have to look up Labyrinth of Lies. I hadn’t heard of it.

It was the reddish-orange sunset light on the waves that made them look muddy. 🙂

  7. I can not express how “warm” your waves are to me. We have been having miraculous snow melting weather in February, but there are mountains of the white stuff that will most likely be here for another month or two. If we were having coffee, I think I could debate myself for hours on the necessity to save for security vs the necessity to spend and enjoy what time we have left. Oh, if we knew what life had in store for us … what would we change?

    1. Thank you so much, Bearyweather. 🙂 That’s an excellent question. I’ve been having similar debates about saving and enjoying, although I suspect for different reasons. Life just seems so short lately. When I think about what I might change, I wonder why I don’t just do it now.

    1. Thank you, Betty. 🙂 I find the news hard to handle, too. “Heartbreaking” is a good word for it. I’ve been following some more positive stuff on Facebook lately, including the Quakers and their “#Love Thy Neighbors (No exceptions)” campaign.

  8. Congrats on passing your test! I’m sure you are right, the rest of the classes will now be fun! I love the photos. I’m hoping you get more sand with coming wind and surf. It’s such a nice place to walk and stand and just be.

  9. Oh, the colours of the sky and reflections on the waves in the first few photos is gorgeous, Robin. Or is that sand churned up from the ocean floor? Whatever it is, it adds a special ‘something’ to your photos.

Izzy and Bella are most welcome to climb all over me if they wish! I adore cats but I have also noticed the way they approach people who are not fussed on felines. My theory is cats wish to be adored and can sniff a non-cat-lover a mile away. They cosy up to those who are not fond of them, make those people fall in love with them, then pull their ‘aloof’ act, just to confuse them. I think they believe they must dominate all who enter their home! 🙂

  10. It sounds like you had a lovely week, Robin. Congratulations on passing your exam. I don’t know anything about boats (or sailing them).
Yesterday was beautiful here, and though I didn’t really get outside for long because of the party we had, it was lovely to have the windows open. That is funny about cat. One of out cats (the other hides from strangers) went over to run himself against my sister-in-law who’s allergic to cats. But she petted him, so I guess she didn’t mind too much. 🙂
I particularly love the shots of waves crashing–but they’re all beautiful. We haven’t been to the beach in a while.

    1. Thank you, Merril. 🙂 I didn’t know a thing about boats or sailing them until I took this class. Other than a canoe or kayak or a ferry, I’ve only been on a boat once. One of my brothers had a boat for fishing in the bay in NJ and we went out with him one day (years ago) and caught a few flounder. It was fun but I was burnt to a crisp even after slathering on massive amounts of sunscreen. The freshly caught flounder were dinner that evening, and really tasty. Thankfully my brother took care of filleting it. I don’t think I could have done it even if I knew how.
