If we were having coffee: Waiting for Hermine

Yesterday evening's sky.
Yesterday evening’s sky.

I wish that I could put up yesterday’s evening sky for all posterity, could preserve a night of love, the sound of a mountain stream, a realization as it sets my mind afire, a dance, a day of harmony, ten thousand glorious days of clouds that will instead vanish and never be seen again, line them up in jars where they might be admired in the interim and tasted again as needed.

~Rebecca Solnit, The Faraway Nearby

Yesterday morning's sky.
Yesterday morning’s sky.

If we were having coffee, tea, water, or some other beverage, we would be meeting early today because an unexpected guest will be arriving tonight.  Early in the week, our weather forecast for the Labor Day weekend was beautiful.  Sunny, cooler, drier days.  Then Hermine developed down in the Gulf of Mexico and she has decided to head our way.  The weather prognosticators are saying the rain and wind will start sometime tonight and continue through tomorrow and Sunday.  There are already bands of rain from the storm approaching Norfolk, Virginia, which is just a few hours south of here.

Bands of clouds this morning.

It’s great to see you again!  Come on in and make yourself at home.  The weather is gorgeous right now so let’s take our drinks and snacks out to the porch where we can enjoy the cool breeze and watch as the high, thin bands of clouds race by.  The hummingbirds will likely be chattering at us, too, and we’ll probably see a few goldfinches and cardinals feeding at the sunflowers.

How are you?  What have you been up to lately?  Have you traveled anywhere or seen anything new?  Have you taken any classes or workshops or in some way learned a new trick or two?  Have you gone on any good hikes or walks?  How is the weather in your neck of the world?  Have you read any good books or watched any good films?

After yesterday morning's rain showers.
After yesterday morning’s rain showers.

I am currently reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.  I’ve had the book on my bookshelf for about a year or so.  I saw an advert for the Tim Burton movie based on the book and thought it was high time I read the book.  I am thoroughly enjoying it so far.  As for films, we recently watched Suffragette.  I thought it was good.  I was reminded of another movie we saw a few years ago about the suffragette movement and the force feeding of women who were arrested and on a hunger strike.  I can’t remember the name of it and a search isn’t turning up what I think it was.  Perhaps it was Iron Jawed Women, but the title isn’t ringing any bells for me.

Three.
Three.

If we were having coffee, you may have noticed that I haven’t been around much since our last coffee chat.  It’s been a busy week.  I went on a quick trip to be with family (including Little Wookie) on Sunday and Monday.  Since returning I’ve been trying to get caught up on everything that has been neglected pretty much since the beginning of July when I went to Ohio.  I’m also getting ready for the Great Fall Cleaning Event.  I didn’t really do the spring cleaning this year so it seems like a good idea to put some energy and zeal behind the fall cleaning.

Ruffled.
Ruffled.

The busy-ness will probably continue throughout the rest of the month because there is another short trip coming up and when I return my niece will be coming to stay and help out for a week.  She was looking for some extra money and I was looking for someone to help out with my garden so it should be a perfect pairing.  If we get the garden cleaned up and ready for winter, I might reconsider expanding it.  For now, I’m leaving the weeds in hopes they will help support the flowers during Hermine’s rainy, windy visit.

Presence.
Presence.

If we were having coffee or tea or something else to drink, I would tell you that storms make me nervous during the best of times.  But you probably already know that.  Hermine’s upcoming visit wasn’t really bothering me much until I had a look at the weather website that likes to make all weather look alarming and dire.  Our weather folks have been remarkably (and unusually) calm and have said that the main threat will be heavy rain (1-4 inches) and wind gusts up to 45 mph on the eastern side of the pennisula (where the beaches are located).  They’re also expecting storm surges, rip tides, big waves, and some beach erosion.  It shouldn’t be as bad here on the western side.

Glowing from within.
Glowing from within.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I was finally able to take a walk in the woods yesterday.  I haven’t been out there for over a month due to the swarms of biting insects.  The breeze and cooler temperatures have swept them aside for now.  Two trees have toppled over.  I’m not sure when that would have happened.  Perhaps during the storms that occurred near the end of July while I was away.  We haven’t had much in the way of wind and rain since that time.

There is a lot of red in the scrounger's garden this year.
There is a lot of red in the scrounger’s garden this year.

If we were having coffee, tea, or something else, I would tell you that the goldenrod at the edge of the meadow is beginning to bloom, the sweet gum tree leaves are beginning to turn yellow and red, and some of the marsh grasses are taking on their fall red color.  The pathways through the meadows haven’t been mowed in months so it’s hard to say what’s going on out there.  M has contacted the man who mowed the front meadow, and he’ll be coming around sometime this fall or winter to mow the side meadow.  The front meadow, which I referred to as the Bare Meadow after it was mowed, is so overgrown again that we’ll probably have to mow it again next year.  It amazes me how fast things grow around here.

Goldenrod.
Goldenrod and Partridge Peas.

If we were having coffee, it would be time for me to turn this over to you.  I will have to get back outside soon to take down the laundry I hung out to dry, and to make sure all the hatches are battened down.  M took care of most of the preparations yesterday evening so we should be good, but it doesn’t hurt to have another look around.  Someone remind me to take down the hummingbird feeders.  They’re glass and it’s probably best to put them somewhere safe from the wind.  Or at least put them on the ground until Hermine moves on.

Black-eyed Susans.

Thank you so much for stopping by for another coffee chat.  I always enjoy your visits.  I doubt we’ll see much of a sunset this evening.  It’s scheduled for 7:30 PM.  As of this writing, they’re predicting most of the heavy rain and gusty winds won’t arrive until about 5:00 AM tomorrow so maybe I’ll head down to the Point just to see what’s going on and enjoy the cooler weather while it lasts.  You’re welcome to join me if you like.

Turning red.

Be good, be kind, be loving.  Just Be.  🙂

This post is in response to Part Time Monster’s #WeekendCoffeeShare.  Thank you to Diana for hosting it.  Also, a big congratulations for the #WeekendCoffeeShare being featured on WordPress’s Daily Post.  So glad to see it being shared among the rest of the community!  Put the kettle on, start the coffee maker, open a bottle of wine, or whatever your preference is, and join us.  I’d love to hear all about what you were up to this week.

  1. Signs of fall are setting in here too – I’m ready, and then again, I’m not. I have had so little motivation this year to do outside work, I’m ready for the need to end so I can stop chiding myself about that lack of motivation – but I also know when winter starts it won’t take long for me to complain about winter. Some people are just not ever satisfied, right? Love your photos, of course. The lush foliage is the part of living on the eastern side of the country that I love – the weather that creates it, is the part I don’t love. Again – not satisfied. Hoping you weather (teehee) Hermine with no problems.

    1. Thank you, Carol. 🙂 I haven’t felt particularly motivated this year, either. That’s why my flower garden is now a weed garden. Hermine’s rain moved in while I was sleeping and the wind is just beginning to get blustery.

  2. We’re going to have a beautiful holiday weekend, 70’s for highs…50’s for low..sunshine. Goldenrod is in full bloom now. Katie and I were up north these past few days, camping for perhaps the last time this summer. What a wonderful summer we had!

I love the ‘glow from the inside’ best in this set of images. We have zinnias this year too. They are so pretty. I hope yours don’t take too much of a beating from the storm approaching. Stay safe and warm.

    1. Thank you, Dawn. 🙂 Warmth is something we have in abundance so staying warm is not a problem, especially with this tropical system bringing in more warmth and humidity. I’ve always found it fascinating how tropical storms can carry the tropics with them. Your weather sounds wonderful. Send some of it this way when you get a chance.

  3. Hey Robin,
Good to see you. As always, your photos are beyond stunning. I want to see Suffragette. I think I read the peculiar children book years ago, but should again because I don’t remember stuff.
Good luck with catch up and settling back in and I hope everything is ok for Hermine’s visit.

    1. Thank you, Mary. 🙂 I just came back from a walk and it’s beginning to get a little blustery out there, but not too bad so far. I don’t remember stuff either. In a way, that makes so many things new again. 😀

      1. Yeah, I often think about that too, how everything is new. Unless it’s something important for some reason, like where my husband is. He travels a lot for work. I asked my granddaughter if she would get me together with my friends if/when I can’t anymore. I may not remember them each time, but what great people to meet for the first time. Then maybe we would get pictures of memory now and again. And stories would be funny again, like they were new.
I often will rent a movie and toward the end of it think….wait a minute….why do I know how this ends? Well, because I had seen it before. It’s all ok. 🙂

  4. I hope Hermine suddenly changes course and blows out to sea. I was looking forward to kayaking and now it looks unlikely until Monday. Still, I can find other things to do. Reading, among them… We are only supposed to get the showers and not the wind here. I will rush to the garden if it isn’t raining in the AM.

    1. I hope so too, Lisa. We’ve had about a 1/2 inch of rain so far and the wind is just starting to pick up. I thought about running some errands this afternoon, but the weather folks keep advising us not to go out if we don’t have to so I may spend the time reading, too. 😀

      1. We’re clearing now–not sure for how long–but it never rained. I think we are on the very edge. Hope it isn’t bad there. I spent the day from 10 am to 3 pm in the garden. It did need some work and I planted seeds for a few fall crops. We’ll see how that goes!

        1. I hope the critters leave your fall crops alone, Lisa. 🙂 It wasn’t bad at all here. Probably a little worse on the coast, but even there it wasn’t as bad as predicted. We’re dealing with some flooding at high tides now, but that’s not a problem on our property and it affords me the opportunity to watch the fish swimming in the woods.

  5. The sky here was beautiful last night, and today was gorgeous. We probably won’t get as much of the storm as you are–it will be worse along the coast. I hope the storm is not too bad for you.

I haven’t read the Miss Peregrine book, although I’ve long been fascinated by the title. 🙂 I didn’t see Suffragette either. I know it got sort of so-so reviews. You probably are thinking about Iron-jawed Angels, although several years ago there was a Masterpiece Theatre series. OK. I just looked it up, and if it’s the same one I’m thinking of, it was from 1974! Shoulder to Shoulder. I most of seen it when it was repeated at some point.

Beautiful photos. I particularly like the sky photos and the golden rod.

    1. Thank you, Merril. 🙂 Wasn’t that sunset last night amazing? It was so dark and gray here just prior to sunset that I decided not to go down to The Point. It was a bad call. By the time I noticed all the brilliant color, it was too late to run down there so I watched it through the trees in the backyard.

The Miss Peregrine book is pretty good. The old photographs the author used are fascinating, and I was reminded of a blogger I followed years ago who wrote horror stories based on old photographs she had collected.

      1. It was beautiful. A FB friend posted beautiful photos of the sunset over the river last night (at the park here). Of course, I was in my p.j’s. Good luck with the storm. I don’t think we’re supposed to get any rain today, but it’s windy like a stormy day at the shore. At least it’s cool enough to have the windows open. 🙂

  6. Hope all is well for you as the storm must be on top of you now as I’m reading this post. I bet you’ll have some lovely photos to share when it is all over as long as the wind isn’t too nasty.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you all about my crazy first week teaching 7th grade! Long weekend most definitely needed! 🙂

    1. Thanks, Karma. 🙂 All is well at the moment (and my internet connection even works!). The rain looks as though it has stopped or will stop soon. It’s a little blustery. Not sure if the winds will pick up or not after this (since even the weather folks don’t know).

You should write a blog post about your first week. It’s one of those milestones. 🙂

  7. Be safe from Hermine and I hope that your area will only be touch by some of the winds and survives the damaged. Yor floer libray was a nice stroll as Iread the blog. Ienjoy seeing birds about and wished it was possible to put out seed.

  8. Love ‘getting breezy by the pond’. I know we don’t get more than the tail-end of your storms, but even here I feel the anticipation, expectation hovering in the air. We had some flooding in our house in 2010 after 140 mm of rain so I am never quite as blasé about storms as I once was. Great deal with your niece!

    1. Thank you, Jane. 🙂 Yes, it’s a wonderful deal with my niece. I’m really looking forward to having some help. I don’t know if we’ll manage to expand the garden, but at least we’ll get things cleaned up.
I am not blasé about storms, either. You never know what Mother Nature will have in store.

  9. It seems such a long time since I dropped by for coffee… That’s probably because it is. My spirit levels and iron levels have both been pretty low, resulting in my ability to sleep for Britain in the Olympics, but both are picking up again now. When you take away my sleep and work, my short amount of awake time is so packed that I’m exhausted and need to sleep again.
We have however been very busy. We’ve been in holiday to Palma in Mallorca, where I very cleverly played like a local and had a siesta each afternoon meaning I could spend the cool evenings out and about with Hubby.
We’ve had wedding activities… Shopping, preparing, partying.. Two weddings so far, Nephew in Cardiff, a fairytale wedding in a castle, and Youngest Daughter last weekend, wonderfully quirky and perfectly suited to both her and her young man. And the weddings don’t stop there, Eldest Daughter is getting married in November too.
We’ve had the house on the market to try and move to Weymouth. After over twenty viewings later this hasn’t happened and our “window of opportunity ” has moved in so we’ll hold back and wait for the next one.
I’ve prattled on with my news, but what about yours? Hope you’re both feeling a lot better after your virus, they do leave you with a thoroughly washed up feeling after don’t they. And what about your weather? Not too much damage on the Wabi sabi ranch I hope.
Thanks for coffee but I’ve got to run now, more places to go and people to see before I can squeeze in another nap before work tonight. Catch you again next time. Bye.

  10. Hope you fared well during the hurricane. I love the pictures. It made me feel like we were actually sitting outside looking at the flowers.

I found this great product for when the bugs are biting. It’s called a Bug Band. They are $1.00 at Walmart. My son is a bug magnet and when he wears one of these, they leave him alone. Just thought they might help you be able to get out more when the bugs have taken over.

  11. I hope you didn’t suffer too much damage with Hermine, Robin. It sounds like you’ve had a busy summer. I am so ready for fall! You and I have always shared a dislike of heat and humidity and this summer has been a particularly miserable one. Mike and I had a nice escape from the heat on our 11 day trip to Iceland, where we had temperatures in the 50s and some pretty heady winds. We both ended up sick, being out hiking every day in the cold and then returning to 90+ temperatures in Virginia. I’m still recovering from walking pneumonia. I can’t wait to be back to normal again. 🙂
