A Sunday stroll

Morning walk on a stormy day.
Morning walk on a misty and windy day.

Nature is so powerful, so strong.  Capturing its essence is not easy — your work becomes a dance with light and the weather.  It takes you to a place within yourself.

~ Annie Leibovitz

The wind moaned and howled through the night, and it has been rockin’ it today.  30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.  I am amazed at how the trees manage to stay upright.

Let's take a peek into the woods.

M made it out to the dock late yesterday and said there were some downed trees.  I won’t be going that way until the wind calms.

This is as far as we can go for now.
This is as far as we can go on the Woodland Trail for now.

M and I went out for a walk together this morning while the wind was raging and the rain was falling sideways.  It was a misty rain, but the wind was blowing it so hard that it had a sting to it when it hit the skin of my face.  We stayed away from the tall trees for the most part, just peering into the woods to see if the trail was flooded yet (it wasn’t when I took the photos, but was beginning to flood along the sides near the marsh grasses).  The water in the marsh was at higher than usual levels.  The meadows have some flooding going on as well.

The camera, the wind, and the mistiness have conspired to make my photos look a little like paintings.

I took Lulu, my little point & shoot camera for this walk.  Taking the Canon out in weather like this is asking for dust on the sensor or worse.  With the rain misting and the wind blowing, everything has a soft blur or edge to it.  The greens are really popping, too.  I had to tone them down in Photoshop.

We still have coastal flood advisories.  Assateague Island on the Maryland end remains closed, and now the Chincoteague Causeway has been closed due to flooding so you can’t get to the island from the Virginia end, either.  It’s probably best not to be at the beach right now.  The National Weather Service continues to warn about elevated water levels and large waves due to Joaquin whose presence is still felt even though he will be passing us by.

The rain has made everything incredibly green.

You might be wondering why this is more than a Silent Sunday post.  One of my projects for the month of October is to take a walk every day and post about it since October means Walktober.  I don’t know if I’ll get around to posting every day (I’ve already missed one day), but I will be walking.  The weather should be settling down in a day or two which will make these walks more pleasant.

At the edge.
At the edge.

That should do it for today’s walk.  Thank you for joining me.  I don’t think we’ll see a sunset tonight although I am thinking of making my way down to the Point if the wind lets up a little.  I’d like to see what the wind and waves are doing, but we have to pass through a wooded area to get to the Point.  The trees are close to the road and, for all I know, some may be lying on the road.  It’s also possible the road is flooded, or will be flooded at the next high tide (which is sometime around 7:30 this evening).  I’ll have to go fairly early since sunset is now at 6:41 PM which will also help me avoid the high tide flooding.  M and I haven’t gone anywhere except around the property since the storm started.  It would be nice to get out, but it might be prudent to wait.  We’ll see.

Today’s joys:  Letting the wind lead us on our walk this morning; splashing in puddles; interesting mushrooms dotting the lawn and pushing up near the trees at the edge of the woods; a beautiful salad for lunch; warm and cozy shelter from the storm, and someone special to share it with.

  1. The green is so green in your part of the world, even with the season turning. We too have been battered by howling gales. No Joaquin for us, just cold howling winds speeding up from the Antarctic. I walked this morning and saw many branches torn from the large trees and signs of loose items having been taken from their places of residence and hurled down streets – it will be good luck to the owners if they find their property again! Once again I had left home without my camera though – so my thought that I might join in Walktober remains just that, a thought!

  2. I like the maple abstract! Hope the winds calm down some tonight. I have a friend in Columbia SC…she’s got major weather issues too. 😦 So…Walktober…I am trying to decide when to do that…we will be out of town, in DC for 10 days the middle of October..and I could do it there, for some variety…but knowing our schedule that might be iffy. Can also go to my favorite park and walk…or take the Katie-girl and walk (it would be a much shorter walk with her) or maybe…hmmmmm….we will see. I need to write about it so maybe some of my other bloggy friends will do it too.

  3. You be safe too Robin. I know my camera takes me regularly out of my safety zone, but sometimes we need to remember how small we are in the grand scheme of things. 🙂

  4. The photos are lovely, and you are right that some of them look like paintings.
I did not go out to walk in the stormy weather. I’m a stay inside in my jammies and drink something warm and eat cookies kind of person when the weather is like this. I’m happy that the sun is out now, even if it’s still a bit cool. Hope you did not get too much flooding or damage.
