If we were having coffee: Wild horses edition

The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire.

If we were having coffee, tea, wine, beer, water, or any other beverage (or no beverage at all), I’d be delighted to see you again.  Hugs if you’re amenable to them.  Come on in, grab whatever you’re drinking (we are well stocked with drinks around here), and let’s take ourselves out to the porch for a sit down and a chat.  Rain has finally come to visit us here on the Wabi-Sabi Ranch, and it’s cool and pleasant on the porch.  We can watch the hummingbirds from there, too, who appear to be enjoying the rain as much as I am.

Someone did not secure their food and the horses made a feast of it.
Someone did not secure their food and the horses made a feast of it.  Looks like pretzels.

How are you?  What have you been doing lately?  Have you gone on any trips?  Visited with friends and/or family?  Danced in the rain?  Listened to good music?  Enjoyed any good books or films?

As you can see, I went to the beach yesterday.  My sister-in-law is visiting for a few days, and we decided to spend the afternoon on Assateague Island.  M had to work so it was just us gals.  We had a great time, and she won’t go home complaining that she didn’t get to see the horses.  In fact, we saw quite a bit of the horses.  A small herd of them came strolling over the dunes and down to the beach to see what the people with bags and blankets had to offer.  They marched right over our beach blanket.  There was no reason for the horses to stop as we didn’t have any food and didn’t leave our bags for them to look through.

The gathering.
The gathering.

The poor women next to us were raided a couple of times although I doubt there was anything left to eat after the horses finished their first sortie.  They do a pretty thorough job of searching through and opening bags.  The wise thing to do is to pick up your bags when you see the horses coming.  They can’t tell if you have well-wrapped food or not in your bags and will inspect them by tearing everything out if you leave the bags for them.

Everyone gather 'round.
Everyone gather ’round.

If we were having coffee (or whatever), I would apologize for my half-hearted attempts at blogging of late.  I don’t know if I’m burnt out on blogging or just generally burnt out on socializing.  I haven’t been in the mood to write, share photos, or do much at all online.

September 2015L 018a-001
Hoping they will share.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I’ve been taking a lot of walks, sometimes with the camera, sometimes without.  I’ve been riding my bike occasionally and swimming in the pool.  I’ve been reading, sometimes books, sometimes magazines, sometimes an article or two that I bookmarked online to read at a later date.  I’ve been meditating and doing yoga.  I’ve been cooking, cleaning, and organizing.  I’ve been learning Italian for the fun of it.

And sometimes I sit and do nothing at all.

Love those shaggy manes.
Love those shaggy manes.

Now that my sister-in-law is here, I’ve been busy with other things.  Going to the beach, walking on the boardwalk at Ocean City, eating out, enjoying some wine or beer, going for bike rides, and sitting around chatting.  We walked out to the dock today, just before the rains came, to enjoy the breeze and watch the fish in the creek jump and splash.

Save me some!
Save me some!

And oh, the rain!!  What a beautiful thing it was to feel those first rain drops.  I did a little dance to give thanks and the rain gods must have appreciated my appreciation because they sent us a little over two inches of rain.  The trees were swaying and dancing, too.  We are due for some more rain later in the evening.

Sandy muzzle.

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that I might retreat for a little while after my sister-in-law leaves on Monday.  The weather is going to be beautiful, and I want to spend as much time outdoors as I can now that the oppressive heat and humidity are being swept away.  I want to sit in the woods for a few hours and enjoy the company of the trees.  I want to go out to the dock and see who flies or swims by.  I want to take my bicycle out and explore some more of the back roads.  I want to commune with the flowers in the gardens and meadows.

Who ate all the pretzels?
Who ate all the pretzels?

If we were having coffee, I would thank you for stopping by for a visit.  I always enjoy our chats.  Stay for as long as you like.  I’m thinking about going for a swim before the next round of rain moves in.  Join me if you feel up to it.

    1. Thank you, Daisy. 🙂 Having friends and family in the Philly area, I know it’s been hot there. In fact, hotter there than here on some days. I think many of us will be welcoming Autumn this year.

  1. Those horses are such a hoot Robin! How quickly our animals learn where the tasty treats are. I am so pleased to read you will be taking time to tend yourself – we all need to do more of this I think. Whatever you do, enjoy every moment! xoxo

    1. Thank you so much, Pauline. 🙂 The blogging mind is often a contrary mind so I refrained from saying I’d be taking a blogging break. Whenever I state I have nothing to blog about and want to take a break, suddenly there are many things to blog about and I don’t need a break. lol! I’m going to try going with the flow and we’ll see what happens.

    1. Thank you, Claudia. 🙂 The horses are beautiful, but I think it would be better if they were not so attracted to the beach by people food. The food can make the horses sick. It also makes them less wild, but not so less that they aren’t a danger since they will kick, bite, or charge if they are upset or feel threatened in some way.

  2. What gorgeous little devil ponies. I hope you enjoyed your sister-in-law’s visit and that you can do all the enjoyable things you have planned for the next few days. Take a deep breath and exhale!

    1. Thank you, Eliza. 🙂 At least the seagulls don’t inspire fear of being kicked or bitten (although if you’ve read a Stephen King novel or two, seagulls might inspire some kind of weird fear…lol!). I expect we’ll still have a few hot and humid days in the weeks to come, but the cooler nights might tone things down a bit.

  3. Have you been learning to speak Italian lately? Is this in part to a possible Italian trip in the future ? I have periodically tried to learn and relearn French over the years. Just because.

    1. I have been learning, Deb, or at least trying to learn. Not much sticks, to be honest. I’ve never been particularly good at languages, but since I’m doing this for fun, I decided to let it be just that: fun. No trips to Italy planned for my immediate future, but I would love to go there someday. It’s funny that you mentioned learning French. The LM suggested I switch over to French because at least I could talk with Mere in French when we get together (and maybe she could correct my atrocious accent…lol!).

  4. I really enjoyed your photos. The wild horses are so beautiful. I have some friends who took a trip there in April or May to watch the horses cross the water. They said it was amazing. How lucky for you to live so close to the sea. I find the beach both calming and rejuvenating! Enjoy your week!

    1. Thank you, Nancy. 🙂 The pony swim is in July, and it’s something I haven’t gone to see yet. I’m not sure I will, for a variety of reasons, but I have gone to see the ponies with their foals after they corral them (a few days before the swim). The little ones are so adorable! I feel the same way about being at the beach. It’s healing, too. 😀

  5. We had some much needed rain, too, three and a half inches Thursday! More last night. The humidity is lower now but not quite low enough to be comfortable or refreshing. Hopefully soon…

Your pictures of the horses are stunning! There’s something magical about the kind of light at the beach that cameras seem to pick up. I noticed the horses’ bloated bellies. When we went to Assateague Island National Seashore we were told their bellies look like that because they eat salt water grass which has a high amount of salt and so they drink a lot of water, too. I can’t help wondering if the salt they find in pretzels adds to their salt intake.

    1. That’s true about the horses and their bloated bellies, Barbara. Sometimes I know just how they feel. lol! Our well water is salty and even the reverse osmosis filter we installed doesn’t remove all of it so I’ve had to switch to bottled water to keep from bloating. I suspect the pretzels and Tostitos and potato chips probably are adding to the horses’ bloat.

We ended up with 2.5 inches of rain and it feels so much better outside now. 🙂

  6. Those horses are beautiful, amazing creatures. I hope you enjoyed your swim, the sea is a little too cold for me this time of year. This is mainly because I haven’t adjusted to it by starting swimming early in the year. Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Thank you, Rosie. The water was wonderful (77°F) with gentle waves big enough to surf (body, boogie board, or real surf board surfing). It’s been rough and choppy during our last few outings so it was nice to be able to go in the water and not get swept off my feet. 🙂

  7. It was so nice to have the rain yesterday, Robin, even though it didn’t rain much here in northern VA. It still was refreshing, especially since it ushered in some cooler and less humid weather. It’s beautiful today, and I’m getting ready to go out for a walk to enjoy the weather. It looks like you’ve had a lovely end to summer, and I enjoyed your photos of the ponies, which I hope to get a glimpse of when I go to Chincoteague and Assateague on my birthday weekend near the end of October.

I did go to a play last night at Arena Stage Theater called Destiny of Desire, a kind of satire on highly dramatic Latin telenovelas. It was quite overdone and funny. We had a lovely dinner at Indian Art Masala before the theater, accompanied by a wonderful Pinot Noir. A fun evening all around! Glad you’re taking it easy, meditating and just enjoying the slow pace of life right now. It also sounds like you’ve had a lovely visit with your sister-in-law. 🙂

    1. I love overdone and funny things, Cathy. Sounds like great fun! 🙂 If you do make it down to Chincoteague and Assateague, and want to get together, let me know. I haven’t had much luck getting together with one or two other bloggers who made it out here this summer. Things have slowed down now so it might be more likely to happen (as long as family members do their part and stop getting sick!). Enjoy this lovely weather. I was out for a while this morning, and I’m taking great delight in having the windows open once again.

      1. You would have enjoyed that play then, Robin. It was quite funny! I would definitely love to get together with you on the Eastern Shore, but maybe it would be better to try for a time when I come to visit my sister in Salisbury and I don’t have Mike with me. It all depends though. We’re coming to Chincoteague on Saturday the 24th and leaving on Monday the 26th. Are you closer to Chincoteague or Salisbury? I will have more time for a longer visit to the Eastern Shore sometime in November, December or January. Because Mike doesn’t have much time off from work, it has to be a short visit this time. 🙂

  8. Wow, I loved all your horse photos and stories. I gather these are wild horses which live near the beach? I live metres from the beach just North of Sydney. I walk my dogs along the beach most dogs and we have a section known as “Dog Beach” where they can run off the lead. My dog helped himself to a sandwich down there. Humph…that dog thinks with his stomach when he is chasing his ball https://beyondtheflow.wordpress.com/2015/06/18/walking-along-the-storm-ravaged-beach/ xx Rowena

    1. Thank you, Rowena. 🙂 Yes, they are wild horses who live on and near the beach. Don’t all dogs think with their stomachs? lol! I think cats do, too. I just had a look at your beach. It’s beautiful!

  9. If we were having coffee, I would tell you I love the photos of the horses – another thing I’d like to experience firsthand. Perhaps someday – if I get that way, I will let you know and we can share a real live cup of coffee, or glass of wine. I would also tell you that it’s been too hot here to make me want to do anything, but tomorrow it’s to start cooling to more fall-like temperatures and I hope to push myself to get outside and move my body some. It’s become very lazy. I would also tell you I’d like to stir my blogging self out of the rut it’s been in, but first I need to determine the direction. Maybe I should just sit down and let my fingers do the talking and deciding. It appears our hummers have moved on and now we have our “fall birds”. Interesting to watch the changes the seasons bring with them. I thank you for the coffee, the company, and the conversation, but now I really must go.

    1. Sometimes letting your fingers do the talking and deciding, at least when it comes to blogger’s block, is the best way to go, Carol. 🙂 I think our hummers will be moving on soon. They have been loading up on food at the feeders and flowers, fattening themselves for the trip. I hope your cooler weather arrived. Today has been really lovely, but I hear the heat and humidity will be moving back in over the next few days. Summer is being stubborn about leaving.

  10. It sounds like you’ve been going with the flow, Robin. I’m happy to hear that and it reminds me to do that more often also. I will be stopping by Assateague and Chincoteague on a trip back from Virginia in early November. That’s exciting for me because I’ve never been to either one, and they are on my bucket list. Good luck with the Italian! I’ve been studying it off and on for a few years. It’s a beautiful language, but the pronunciation throws me a bit. I also think you would love Italy…there’s a lot of spiritual energy there. For me, it was almost more about the way I felt there than what I actually saw. Regardless it’s a beautiful country with a rich history.

    1. Thank you, Shirley. 🙂 The pronunciation has been throwing me, too. I’ve been using an app and whenever I have to speak a phrase, I get the message “Let’s try that again,” followed by, “Hmmm… not quite correct. Try again,” followed by, “Let’s set this one aside until later.” lol! Ah well, I’m still enjoying it. I’ve heard that about Italy (the spiritual energy). I wonder if that’s one of the reasons people speak of the light in Italy, too.

If you do come out this way and would like to meet up, let me know. Or if you need a few tips and local secrets, I can help with that, too. 🙂

  11. Love those photos! Assateaugue is a place I’ve always wanted to visit—I remember first reading about it in a book that I had as a kid, and I’ve always loved horses. Hope you’re feeling relaxed and having a nice weekend!

      1. I did—I read the first one. I don’t think I’ve read the others, but my mom bought me a vintage copy of the first one from a little antique store, and I loved it when I was a kid. I was obsessed with horses for a long time.

  13. I don’t quite know why it gave me such a strange sense of grief to see the wild ponies rummaging through the beach gear, but it really did. This is not, in any sense, a criticism of your photographs, just a wish that the world were different.

      1. There’s something deeply distressing about seeing such a beautiful and noble animal nosing around in human stuff. Sometimes I even feel that way about my domestic cats when they sort through my garbage (which occasionally they do) though usually they are doing it for fun rather than because they want to eat anything.

  14. I’m so pleased to hear that it finally rained for you, and that the Rain Gods were so kind in giving you plenty. It’s such a shame that beach-goers do not heed the signs regarding not feeding the wild horses, I’m sure that pretzels are not a suitable diet for them. They are such beauties though, if we had horses roaming our local beaches, I’m sure I would visit the beach far more often than I do. 🙂
