Woodland wonderland

It snowed last night and this morning!  It is so beautiful outside.  A winter wonderland.  Yes, I know.  I’m mad as a hatter for being so excited about it when everyone else is sick of winter.  I hope I stay mad as a hatter for the rest of my life.  I wouldn’t want to lose the sense of wonder that arises in me whenever it snows.

As children we had a sense of wonder.  Our eyes were wide open and drinking in the gifts we beheld.  Our thirsty souls could not get enough of the wonders of creation.  Then, somehow, we grew too old to dream.  We tired of the abundance of the world, and stepped away from the banquet of life.

Can you spot the Mockingbird?  I think he needs a name.  He probably has a name but I don’t speak Mockingbird so I’m not sure what it is.  He doesn’t object when I call him Milton so I’ll call him that until I can understand what his true name is.

M has the day off, and we’ve been out playing in the snow.  I’m going back out in just a bit so we can build a snowman because, yes, I want to build a snowman!  In case you haven’t seen it, that’s a reference to a song in Disney’s movie, Frozen:

Do you wanna build a snowman?
Come on, let’s go and play.

In the Mystery Woods.

The blackbirds have invaded the feeders again so I’ve also spent some time sitting nearby to keep them away.  Otherwise, the little birds would never have a chance at the food.

Back on our woods.

I think the flock of blackbirds is growing.  Yesterday when I was out walking they flew overhead, and I stood there for about five minutes watching them stream from the marsh to the woods.  The sky was filled with birds, and it was the most incredible sight and sound.  I didn’t bother to photograph it because the sight doesn’t translate well to photo.  It was enough to stand there watching and listening.  I’ve been thinking of them as the 10,000 Blackbirds.  It may be more.  It may be less.

Cold beauty.

Looks like M is ready to go back out now.  Thanks for stopping by today and joining me in the snow.  I’m not sure if we’ll see the sunset here today.  The clouds have been pretty thick so it seems unlikely.  On the off chance it clears up, meet you out at the dock if you’re game.  Full winter gear is a must since it is quite cold out there.
