He sings throughout the night

After we landed on these shores, the nearly constant proximity of birds enchanted me, though it took me some time to hear their calls as a nonverbal speech, rather than as mere background music.  When the songbirds moved in waves into the surrounding woodlands in the spring, to court and sing, it simply fitted the characteristics of a season that returned on schedule the way we expected it to.  It did not occur to me at first that they were not singing just for the sake of it but that it had a meaning for them.
