thicket
The word thicket is ancient, little changed in sound or spelling from the Old English thiccet, meaning “thick place.” So, thicket is a dense growth of vines, canes, succulents, shrubbery, small trees, impenetrably tangled, almost impassable. Thicket is often a transitional phase of plant succession, between scrub and woodland. It can also be a permanent feature, such as Big Thicket National Preserve in Texas.
