The whispered voice

Looking through the Marsh Window near sunset yesterday
Looking through the Marsh Window near sunset yesterday.  (Click on the photo to see the slightly larger version where you can see a bit more detail.  That’s true of any of the photos, by the way.)

I do believe in an everyday sort of magic — the inexplicable connectedness we sometimes experience with places, people, works of art and the like; the eerie appropriateness of moments of synchronicity; the whispered voice, the hidden presence, when we think we’re alone.

~ Charles de Lint

Mellow gold
Mellow gold

I think I may have used that Charles de Lint quote once before, but it’s a timely coincidence that I came across it again today after a night and morning filled with thoughts of synchronicity, and dreams sent out to the Universe that come true.

Bells at sunset
Ringing in sunset

It was around four o’clock in the morning near Dingwall in Nova Scotia, and light flowing into the bedroom woke me up.  I raised my head up enough to look outside, and I was awed and humbled by one of the most magnificent sunrises I’d ever seen in my life.

I had the good fortune of witnessing three or four more magical sunrises like that during the time we were vacationing on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia in June of 2012.  During one of those sunrises, I turned to M and said, “I could easily live here.”  Knowing it was unlikely I’d be able to live in the Cape Breton Highlands, at least at any time in the near future, I decided I’d settle for a place like it, where the sunrises or sunsets were enchanting and extraordinary.  (It should be noted that could be any place, if one learns to spend time with and appreciate the sunrises and sunsets.)

Sunset yesterday
Sunset yesterday from the dock here at the Wabi-Sabi Ranch.

It was not a wish or a dream as much as it was just a passing thought, a thought that came back to me yesterday evening as I sat on the dock watching the sunset.

Sun pillar
Sun pillar

Sun pillars form when sunlight (or another bright light source) reflects off the surfaces of millions of falling ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds . . . The ice crystals have roughly horizontal faces.  They are falling through Earth’s atmosphere, rocking slightly from side to side.

Twilight magic
Twilight magic

It seems my passing thought has come true.  I have witnessed spectacular sunrises and magnificent sunsets since we relocated to the Eastern Shore.  How lucky is that?

When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.

Are you bored yet?
Are you bored yet?

After reading about sun pillars, I look at the light streaming upward in these images and think about those ice crystals with their horizontal faces, gently rocking towards Earth, and it makes me think perhaps it is a way for the clouds to sing a lullaby to the sun as it leaves us for another place and time.

This beautiful sunset ushered in brutally cold weather.  The wind has been moaning and howling and pummeling the house in great blustery gusts.  It’s mostly cloudy with occasional bright sunny spells.  The clouds have been racing each other across the sky since early this morning, and it looks like they’ll break up enough for another wondrous sunset.

Maybe you're bored now?
Maybe you’re bored now?

Thank you for visiting on this chilly, blustery Sunday.  I hope you enjoyed the sunset.  I’ll be bundling up to go out to the dock again this evening to see once again what happens when the sun and clouds decide to play on a cold evening in November.

Today’s joys:  Curried sweet potato and carrot soup.  (So glad I cooked a few things before we had to shut down the kitchen!)  The Best Socks in the Universe.  (They keep my toes nice and warm and toasty.)  A washer and dryer to make doing the laundry easier.  Joking around with M while he installs the new flooring in the kitchen.  (I help out when he needs it, but it’s basically a one-man job.)  Izzy, my lap warmer.  (The weather has to be cold for her to come up and sit on my lap.  She’s really not a lap cat.)

  1. Loved “mellow gold”….stopped and looked at that for a long time. Then stopped again at ‘are you bored yet’ because no I was not…loved that one too. Thanks for taking us out to see the sky

  2. Silly Robin, how could any person with a heart possibly tire of seeing that beautiful sunset? I’ve heard that simply by showing your appreciation for something is enough to bring it into your life. 🙂

  3. Robin, your passing wish certainly came true – these photos are magnificently beautiful! Now I understand why you moved. Charles de Lint – love his work, just finished reading two of his more recent books.
