Kitchens and glitches

Getting some fresh air and exercise
Getting some fresh air and exercise

CONRAD: Oh, Jerry are you okay with this hinge?
JERRY: Yeah.

CONRAD: I can get you any kind you want, you know. Four holes, three holes, two holes, bronze, no hinge at all.

JERRY: You know, why don’t we just go with the one in your hand?

CONRAD: Oh, these are different.

JERRY: Drop one. . . . left!

~ From episode 152 of Seinfeld, “The Nap”

Yellowing
Yellowing

There is an episode of Seinfeld (the television show) in which Jerry is having new kitchen cabinets installed and the contractor, Conrad, appears to be an indecisive type of guy who consults Jerry on every single detail, right down to the smallest of things.  “Indecisive” was not the best word because I suspect Conrad is a contractor who wishes to please his client and as such, is a perfectionist who makes sure that his client is happy with every little thing.

I did not always or often sympathize with the main characters on Seinfeld (they were not written to be the type of people you would sympathize with), but this is one instance in which I can relate to Jerry’s frustration.  You see, the kitchen cabinet installers were here yesterday.  All.  Day.  Long.  From sunup until past sundown.  And they were filled with questions.

The Installer In Charge and his Able Assistant are nice guys, and are adept at their job.  However.  There are a bazillion little details in a kitchen, details that require a decision, and because I happened to be home all day, I had to answer the bazillion questions.  “On which side do you want this hinge?”  Or the same question in a different way:  “Which way do you want the door to open?  From the left?  Or from the right?”  “Where do you want the knobs situated?”  “The support struts won’t fit where they are located in the plan.  Should I relocate them here?  Or here?”  (It should be noted that during our last two kitchen remodels, I was working outside of the home, and very often the contractors had to make executive decisions about the small details or wait until either M or I came home to check with them.)

By mid-afternoon, my head was pounding.  Yeah, I know.  First World problems.  I wouldn’t sympathize with me, either.  So let me say now that I am deeply appreciative and grateful not only for the opportunity to spend time with people who know their job well, but also for the fact that we have a house, a kitchen, and the means to renovate the kitchen.  I practiced a lot of patience and gratitude throughout the day yesterday.

There were glitches, of course.  There are always glitches.  A cabinet was missing and did not get delivered on Monday.  The case of the missing cabinet was finally solved, but it won’t get here until tomorrow.  That means the cabinet installers could not finish some of the work  (including hanging the missing cabinet, putting up the crown molding, and putting the knobs on the drawers and cabinets)  and will have to come back in a couple of weeks.  They are booked pretty solid so we won’t see them again until maybe the week of December 2.  Maybe.

Near the graveyard
Near the graveyard

Our designer messed up the order on one of the corner cabinets.  Thankfully the installer could fix the situation by a quick switch with another cabinet and moving the hinges on the doors around.  Another corner cabinet, the first one you’ll see when you walk in the kitchen, was gouged with a box cutter when it was packed.  At least that’s the way it looks.  I am fairly certain the cabinet installers didn’t do it based on the evidence.  The installers took pictures, called the kitchen designer, sent her the pictures, and failed to tell me anything about the gouge.  The designer called me late in the day, nattering on about how they were going to try to repair the cabinet, and I hadn’t a clue as to what she was talking about.

Early on in this process I made the decision that I would not settle for repaired cabinets this time around.  I did that last time, and the repairs were poorly done and I regretted not having them either fix them again or reorder the cabinets.  The cost of a new kitchen is horribly expensive and, well, we are paying for new cabinets.  Not damaged and repaired cabinets.  So, I told Designer Girl that they could give the repair a try, and if I could still see the gouge or the repair, she’d have to order a new cabinet.  I honestly hope they can repair it because I’ve seen enough waste on this property.

There’s more, but you don’t really want to hear about all that, do you?  And I bet you don’t want to see more pictures from my walk this morning, either.  You probably want to see this:

And this:

It’s coming along nicely, don’t you think?  I am loving it already.  It’s coming together the way I visualized it, and I know it’s going to suit me and this house nicely.

The counter top guys are coming by sometime today to do the template.  You can see our cardboard template in the second shot.  We want the counter to curve in a way that’s similar to the curve in the track lighting above it so we spent some time last night deciding on where the curves should be.  That should make it easier today.  I bet the counter top guys will have tons of questions anyhow, but at least that major decision has been made.

Except for the short, early morning walk I took yesterday, I did not get outside.  I think that’s what made me so cranky.  I’ve been spending a lot of time outdoors, working around the property and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.  With an afternoon two-hour window on the arrival of the counter top guys today, I was able to get out for a while this morning.  It’s a brisk, chilly day.  Sunny and beautiful.  I feel so much better now that I’ve gotten some exercise and taken lots of deep breaths.

Isn't he pretty? A little on the stern side, too, from the looks of him.

There is a flock of bluebirds living near our little graveyard.  Usually they’re skittish, but today they didn’t mind me in the least, and went on feasting on the sumac berries while I took a few shots.  There were a couple of woodpeckers and goldfinches there, too, but they kept hiding behind branches or berries or pine needles.

Mine!

I reckon that’s it from the Wabi-Sabi Ranch for today.  Thank you for visiting, and listening to me vent.  I truly am grateful for the opportunities we have here, and I probably shouldn’t whinge about it.

How is your week going?  Anything you want to whinge about?  Feel free to do so in the comments.  We’ll call it Wednesday’s Whinge and get it all out, once and for all.

We have a lot of red and green around here.

NaBloPoMo November 2013

Today’s joys:  Sunshine and blue skies.   The brisk north wind nipping at me.  A long walk this morning.  The beginnings of a lovely new kitchen.  Food I cooked and froze so we could microwave it during this time of flux.  Bluebirds!!

  1. while I love walking around with you, I really do want to see more kitchen photos. Yes, the niggling questions are enough to drive one (or both of you, in this case) CRAZY. But let me add, that it is better than coming home to knobs and hinges not where you want them. We’ve been there and done that too! I love the green (it is green, isn’t it?). Miss you both, not sure when we will be there, I’ve had several job opportunities surface…

  2. I’m with you, Robin. That sort of thing grates on me. And I’d be damned if were going to settle for anything less than what I paid for. You’re right. Kitchens cost a small fortune. The cabinets are GORGEOUS!

Love the bird photos in this post, as well. Take care, my friend!

  3. Love your cabinet color and I’ll bet the kitchen is going to be a dream come true when it’s finally done. As to whining, there is no way you could possibly beat me this week.

  4. LOVE your bluebird photos! I’ve never been able to get a shot so nice and close up as these. The kitchen looks like it is coming along very nicely! Beautiful. I remember remodeling our kitchen when I was pregnant with my first daughter (yikes, what were we thinking???) and it seeming to take FOREVER.
Here’s my whinge: feeling like I’m at a standstill on my next home improvement project, the kitchen floor. Got a couple estimates, been looking at tile samples and feeling more confused than ever!

    1. Thank you, Karma. 🙂 And thank you for whingeing along with me. What kind of flooring are you looking at? We looked at all kinds of possibilities so I know how confusing it can be.

      1. I’ve been wanting a tile floor for a while now. There is such a HUGE range of price on tiles. For the most part though, the tiles themselves aren’t super expensive, it is is the cost of installation.

        1. That’s where we ran into problems, too. I thought maybe the high installation costs were a result of our location. We’ve had tile, hardwood, and vinyl flooring in our kitchens over the years, and decided to go with… well, I shouldn’t say just yet. 😀

  5. You have my sympathy with the cabinet install. If you paid for new – you should get new and undamaged – and that’s not being difficult. You will live with those a long time and little things will bug you ( wringing hands and fretting)
The birds were a nice treat to soothe you – and let you know in 100 years it won’t matter? That red leaved tree near the graveyard is gorgeous. Cold coming here quickly – so any color will be short lived!

    1. Thank you, PhilosopherMouse, for putting things into perspective for me. I decided to insist on a new cabinet, and you’re right about how it won’t matter in 100 years. Unless the house lasts 100 years, in which case, a new cabinet might still be standing?? 😀

  6. Don’t settle for anything less than you have pictured in your mind Robyn. Your kitchen is such an important space, it should be perfect for you. I’m speaking from experience…..my Wednesday Whinge will be about MY kitchen, which never quite came together the way I wanted it to. Tradesmen talked me out of things I wanted and into things that I didn’t want and I’ve never been completely happy with the result. So stick to your expectations of what you want your kitchen to look like and don’t waver! It looks great in the photos though.

I love your little Bluebirds! They are so delicate and such a pretty colour. 🙂

  7. We redid our kitchen and 3 bathrooms. All at once. I thought husband was going to be permanently mentally disabled. There are about a gazillion million trillion decisions. BUT it’s all beautiful now. And your kitchen is beautiful too. Stay strong…

Love the bluebirds….love love love….they are something aren’t they? I saw one here about 3 weeks ago, though they usually don’t stay around through winter here. It was such a warm fall. Maybe mine went to visit you!

  8. Those are breathtaking autumn photographs. What a riot of colours and the details within!

Interesting to see you have tried to link that to your familiar space, the kitchen. What made you think of that?

    1. Thank you so much, Shakti, for stopping by and commenting, and for asking such an interesting question. My first response was to look at the obvious in that one of the functions of my blog is a diary of sorts, and we are in the midst of renovating the kitchen. But I got to thinking about what you wrote about the riot of colours and details, and trying to link that with the kitchen, and that brought up deeper things. Thank you for the nudge to the mind. 🙂

  9. Your kitchen is looking gorgeous already, I can’t wait to see it finished! So sorry to hear about all the headaches the installers are causing you…..all those little questions, and then they don’t tell you about the damaged cabinet?? Ridiculous! Crossing my fingers that things will go a bit smoother when they come back!

  10. Beautiful bluebird photos, Robin! The kitchen looks like it will be beautiful; can’t wait to see more as the project progresses. I watched (and helped) my parents build and remodel houses all my life; I actually like thinking about all those things and making all the decisions. I especially love talking to the tradesmen and learning how things work – must be my “secret engineer” 🙂 I did a cosmetic update on our kitchen a few years ago, puzzling out the details myself, and have been pleased with the results; now I’m planning a total kitchen remodel in the next few years and can’t wait.

    1. Thank you, Lynn. 🙂 I think M and I could have done much of this on our own (the design we paid for, in the end, turned out to be our own design because we had to tweak what Designer Gal came up with so much that it really wasn’t her design anymore), but we had to go through the designer and licensed dealer to get the brand and style of cabinets we wanted. We haven’t made any final decisions on it yet, but we’re leaning towards doing the bathrooms on our own (except for some plumbing help). The last time we had a designer involved in a bathroom remodel, we ended up throwing away her design and designing it ourselves.

Have fun with you planning! I think that’s the really fun stage of things, when anything seems possible. 🙂
