Let there be many windows to your soul, that all the glory of the world may beautify it.
~ Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Like many of the photographers I know, I have a fascination with paths, gates, doors, and windows. During the time I’ve been at the Wabi-Sabi Ranch, I’ve noticed that nature has created quite a few windows on the property.
Love unlocks doors and open windows that weren’t even there before.
~ Mignon McLaughlin
I think, and I could be wrong, that part of the allure is the way these things lead the eye, and the mind, to wondering what’s beyond. I also think it has something to do with framing. In the image “Window overlooking the marsh,” the scene beyond is nicely framed by the trees and grasses that create the window.
I like looking through things, peering in between leaves and grasses and trees. Sometimes I look to see what’s behind the curtain. Other times I admire the curtain itself.
Our senses are indeed our doors and windows on this world, in a very real sense the key to the unlocking of meaning and the wellspring of creativity.
~ Jean Houston
I thought I might be able to ramble a bit more about windows, but I have to get this post ready to go out so I can get back to the working on the kitchen. I’ll have pictures from this weekend’s renovation work sometime next week for those of you who are interested in such things.
While I’m on the subject of pictures and photography, Scott at Views Infinitum has a new assignment. Assignment 27: Vacation sounds like fun. Go have a look, and see what you can come up with.
Thank you so much for visiting. Do you have a fascination with windows and doors, too? Or do your fascinations lie elsewhere?
Be good, be kind, be loving. Just Be. 🙂
Today’s joys: Destroying and removing the last bits of the old kitchen. Creating something new with M. A misty morning. Miso soup with noodles and vegetables. Relaxing at the end of the day.
I see through your windows. Very nice to view.

My fascination with doors is greater than with windows – but – I have decided I want an old window to use as a frame for an outside photo which will be hung on my dining room wall. After I paint that wall. Later.

Same here, Carol, with regard to doors. I have a lot more photos of doors than windows. I seem to have trouble framing windows, and often end up disappointed in the shots I take of them. I had similar plans for the “Window in the garden” pictured in this post (to use it as a frame for a photo or photos), but the frame is rotting so it will remain in the garden for now. I do have some old windows and frames back in Ohio that I need to move out here to be used for that purpose.

Such beautifully composed photos, Robin. I love your curly curtains. These photos are in harmony with the photo challenge this week of “layers”. http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/11/15/weekly-photo-challenge-layers/
No vacation for us this year, either. All the action has been home in the garden… Best wishes, WG

Thank you, WG. I saw the photo challenge, but it hadn’t occurred to me that my windows would fit the theme. I’ve been inhaling too many paint fumes, and my brain is slow. 😉

Great post Robin! The translation of nature as the windows and doors to the landscape is perfect. Your images and quotes always work so well together.

I love your windows. I find views like this in nature quite fascinating and I love the way you’ve interpreted them here. This reminds me of a line from the comedian Steven Wright (remember him? We seem to have similar senses of humor, so I thought you might like him too) “I was born by caesarean section, but you really can’t tell, except that every time I leave my house I go out through the window.”

I LOVE Steven Wright, and even had the good fortune to see him perform when we lived in the Bogs. LOL @ the joke! Thank you for that.

What a delightful post, Robin! The “vertical blinds” made me laugh out loud – the perfect title! I too love windows and doors. Sometimes it is about the visual framing but also I think there is an archetypal resonance in them, whether they are created by humans or by nature. For me, it is the allure of liminal space, the in betweenness, of them that makes them show up over and over again in my photos, in my garden, and in my nighttime dreams. Moving from one state to another, the stuff of human dreams.

Liminal! How wonderful that you used that word, Lynn. It’s a new word for me, and in the way of new words, it’s been showing up practically everywhere. I’m always delighted to see it. I also like your thoughts on windows and doors, and the in betweenness of them. Thank you. 🙂

It is, Colline. 🙂 Just before leaving the kitchen for a short break, I stood back, looked around, and smiled. It already looks so much better than it did.

Yes, fascination with windows and doors, as well! Lovely post. Curley-cues delightful. Are you at all overwhelmed posting every day? Or are you enjoying it? Or a little of both?

Thank you, Kathy. 🙂 Funny you should ask that. I was just thinking yesterday that November is a long month when you’re posting every day. lol! Now that we’re at the part of the kitchen renovation where others do the work, posting isn’t so bad, but I struggled and felt a little overwhelmed during the past week or so when we had to finish the demolition work, finish the painting, and start installing the floor. In between, I’ve been enjoying it. So the answer is… a little of both. 😀
