I took a walk today.
You are probably thinking, “What’s special about that?”
Well, everything and nothing, I suppose.
I haven’t been going out for walks this week. One bike ride. No walks. I would go out and stand on the porch or the deck, and call it good enough because I can see plenty from the porch or the deck without immersing myself in the heat, the humidity, and the insects.
I missed the meditative quality of my walks so it was time to suck it up, put on the anti-bug gear, and go out to see what Mother Nature has been up to.

It was a good walk. After a few minutes I forgot about the heat. I recently heard that there was a study involving people moving from north to south or from south to north. People moving from north to south take about three months to acclimate. People moving from south to north have a harder time of it, and it takes them about three years to get used to the change in climate.
I dunno. I’ve never had any trouble adjusting to a cooler region. Going from South Carolina to Chicago, Illinois was a piece of cake. I felt the same about moving from Georgia to Ohio. But I’m a cold weather kind of person, and never much cared for summer so it stands to reason that cooler climes are easier for me. That said, I’m learning to appreciate a good sweat. Mother Nature’s sauna is right outside my door.
That’s about it for today’s walk around the Wabi-Sabi Ranch. Thank you so much for joining me. Let’s sneak inside and enjoy the air conditioning for a little while.
Once we’ve cooled off, we can go back out to the deck and enjoy the breeze. The insects won’t bother us there. The stiff breeze generally keeps them away. Cutting back the brush has helped, too. And we can always light a citronella candle if needed. Oh! And don’t forget the fireflies!! Their happy little twinkling lights make the yard look like a galaxy filled with stars.

Love the description of the firefly lit garden Robin, sounds like an enjoyably spent evening communing with nature outside. I think I;m more of a cool temperature person myself, so good job I’m British, with our usually wet Summers. 😉 Once or twice we’ve been surprised by high temperatures but not often. This being Wimbledon fortnight you can be sure it’ll pour down.

Fireflies sound magical. I don’t believe I have ever seen them though. I’ve headed south for a few days and I’m in The Town of My Birth right now. Heading south in Australia means cooler weather, and I’m loving it! My youngest son is with me and keeps commenting on the cold air, but for me, it is very ” familiar” and feels just right. Like you, I’m a cold climate person. Have a great weekend Robin.

I loved the “matching outfits” caption – very cute. Sometimes I have to do the opposite from what you’ve described – escape from the air conditioning to the outside so I can warm up. Hubby likes it a bit chilly for my tastes!

The bugs have ruined my summer walks, too. And my picture taking … they land on my objects or camera or me and bite just as I click .. darn things. The bug gear and spray is warm and stinky (I hate it), but if I don’t wear it I am bitten badly. It has been raining here for days … creating great conditions for the mosquitoes to increase in numbers (sigh).
Brighter note … I have noticed the fireflies, too. It stays light here until after 10 pm, so you have to stay up late to see them .. but, that is what is great about summer … I can stay up as late as I want.
I am glad you got tough and went on your walk to take some pretty pictures to share with us.

Thank you, Bearyweather. 🙂 Warm and stinky describes the bug gear very well. My poor hands are taking a beating (or cutting/biting) from the deer flies. I may start wearing gloves since my hands are the only available skin left for the bugs to bite.

It gets hot & humid in the Midwest too, but it doesn’t go on forever like it does here!!! The heat and humidity is actually late here – it’s usually really bad for all of June. We’re nearly into July before it got consistently bad.
I loved the pictures and your walk – very enjoyable.

I’m with you on it being easier to adjust to a cooler climate. Can’t imagine ever going back to the Land of 110-degree Summer now…It’s good that you can make peace with Nature’s sauna and get out and enjoy it 🙂

Oh, Robin, my heart goes out to you! Like you, I don’t like the heat. In fact, I guess you could say I hate it. I’m afraid I’ve never adjusted to heat–especially got burned out on it in Vietnam and Haiti–no pun intended.

It would be hard going outside in a hot, hot place. I remember feeling crazed in 90 degree heat in New York City and Georgia. Here it’s pretty cool but the darn mosquitoes are fierce. Stay cool, my friend!
