78 degrees of coolness

Watching the sunset yesterday.
Watching the sunset yesterday.

The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be.

I have a question for you.  When did 78 degrees become cool?  Not cool as in hip.  Cool as in the temperature doesn’t feel too bad.

On the road

For most of my life I’ve insisted that any temperature above 70 degrees is hot.  Yet here I am finding 78 degrees to be rather comfortable.  The air conditioning is kept at 78 degrees during the day here at the Wabi-Sabi Ranch (80 if there’s nobody home).  After stepping outside into 90+ degree (with 80% humidity) weather, 78 degrees feels good.

It has been very hot the past few days.  It was 80 degrees at 6:30 this morning, and it’s been that way this week.  I went out for a bike ride on Monday morning anyhow.  The great thing about riding a bike is that as long as you’re moving, you create your own air conditioning.  The heat doesn’t catch up with you until you stop.  (The bugs find you too, but never mind that.  I’ve complained about them enough over the past few blog posts.)

Let me tell you what I think of bicycling.  I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.  It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance.  I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel… the picture of free, untrammelled womanhood.

Susan B was right about the sense of freedom bike riding brings.  I like getting somewhere on my own steam.  (And it probably IS steam given the heat out there.)

I have a confession to make.

I don’t feel much like blogging lately.  Nope.  Not at all.

Let's look the other way.
Let’s look the other way.

If I disappear for a while, that’s most likely the main reason why.  There is another reason as well.  I have some reading to do.  I’ve been invited to do another book review for TLC Book Tours.  The book arrived the other day, and since it takes me so long to pull together a review, I need to spend time on that.

Portions of the road were lined with daylilies.

I reckon that’s it from the hot and steamy Wabi-Sabi Ranch for today.  Thank you for dropping by.  There’s a pitcher of iced tea all ready for you, and a breeze blowing outside.  Have a seat under the umbrella on the back deck, sip your tea, feel the breeze, listen to the birds, and relax.  That’s the best way to handle a day like today.  If it gets too hot, come inside.  M installed the new blinds in the Great Room, and it’s amazing how much cooler it feels once the sun is blocked.

  1. I’d sit but the bugs would get me. Love the way you are off exploring – that’s important ( and your brain is writing – it just hasn’t told you yet)
78 sounds coooool. Probably 100 here today. Get those dog walks in very early and late – and keep moving…if only I trusted Molly to not crash me on my bike…and don’t trust her with roller blades either.
Enjoy reading – the brain loves to explore other’s vocabulary and sentence structure. And then as a bonus, there’s a story!

  2. Gulping the Iced Tea, Robin, and I know I only do li’l poems an suchlike, but I sometimes don’t feel much like updating, and I just comment and cruise the airwaves, seeing what everyone else is doing. Mind you, these next two weeks are Wimbledon, and I do so love to watch tennis, makes me feel like an expert, (I can hardly get the ball over the net, ) but I do so love to ‘think’ I could !! 😉 Glad you have your blinds to keep cool, I love blinds more than curtains, but I would like to get new ones, wooden ones (ours are blue metal at the mo, ) I can just imagine, sitting on your deck, sipping my tea and dozing, listening to the song of the birds.. Just heavenly …. Happy New Trails. xPenx

    1. Your “li’l poems an suchlike” are wonderful, Pen, and I imagine they take much more time to put together than my rambling posts that often go nowhere. Thank you. 🙂

  3. 78 sounds wonderful …. not sure what it is right now here in Darwin but the predicted high is 89.6 …. and steamy …. but in a few hours we will be at the airport and soon after in the cold wintry southern part of the nation where no doubt we will be shivering! Happy reading …. stay cool and unbitten … we are covered in itches and bumps from mosquitos and sandflies (midges) so we are not convinced of the value of taking vitamin B1 😦

    1. I’m sorry to hear the B1 didn’t work, Christine. 😦 I used to smoke cigarettes and the bugs left me alone, even when I wasn’t puffing smoke all around. I keep wondering if there is something in the cigs that can be imitated without taking up smoking and ruining my health.

  4. 78 would be boiling for me. We tend to fall between 18 and 24 degrees C in the summer, which I find just divine. Anything warmer gets reserved for vacations and days when I don’t have to get dressed for work. 🙂

  5. I know what you mean about not feeling like blogging. I’ve had that happen too, mostly because I have other things I want to do besides sitting in front of a computer. So take a break! It’s good to get away for a while.

Part of why 78 doesn’t feel bad is because it’s so hot outside that the air conditioner runs frequently. When it’s cool out and the air doesn’t run as much, the house feels oppressive.

Here’s a four-part series I wrote about being discouraged about my blogging in 2012.

    1. Thanks, Nancy. 🙂 I’ve been blogging since 1999, in some form or another, and go through long periods of blog, blog, blog, and then short or long periods of getting away from it. I think this latest string of blog, blog, blogging has been my longest.

  6. You will be greatly missed during those times you must take a break from blogging, but it is certainly understandable that other things are needing your attention. I will look forward to those times you are able to post!

  7. 78 sounds hot to me, but I live in London. I think we are expecting a high of 75 on Sunday and I’m looking forward to feeling some warmth. Lovely photos and happy reading!

  8. We’ve all got a case of the Summertime’s around here…brain-meltingly hot and humid (“The Air You Can Wear”) doesn’t exactly equal Creative Genius for me…I just want to sit and stare at things. Enjoy your little breaks whenever you decide to take them 🙂

    1. Thanks, Marie. 🙂 That’s exactly how I feel — wanting to just sit and stare at things. Makes me wonder how people get things done around here.

  9. I think 78 can be considered cool – it is funny how our perspectives change throughout the seasons really. In January we say things like “Wow it is going to be 50 degrees today – so nice and warm!” Then May rolls around and we say things like,”Can you believe it is only going to be 50 today? Brrrrrr!” 😉 I feel like I can see the humidity in your photos Robin, but it does seem to bring out some beautiful color. No worries about how much or little you post (remember the “when I feel like it” way, lol!) but I do hope you are still doing photos or creating collages for the June photo thingy I posted – I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

    1. Thank you, Karma. 🙂 I am taking photos for the photo thingy and hope to pull something together soon. After that, I’m thinking a long break might be just the thing.
