Light and humidity

Light and shadows at sunset

You can’t have a light without a dark to stick in it.

The plan was to write about how wonderful the light is here on the Eastern Shore, especially when it’s combined with humidity, but as I sat here staring out the window and  thinking about how to start this post, I saw my first wild turkey.  I sometimes think I have one of  the best views in the world right outside the window to the right of my desk.

I’ve seen storm clouds roll in, the pinks and purples of sunset, the wind dancing in the trees and shrubs, birds of all kinds (many of whom I have not yet identified), rabbits, deer, snakes, and now a wild turkey.  It’s much better than television, if you ask me.

All that shimmers
All that shimmers

Light gives of itself freely, filling all available space.  It does not seek anything in return; it asks not whether you are friend or foe.  It gives of itself and is not thereby diminished.

~ Michael Strassfeld

I'm afraid you may see far too much of this tree as it's captured my attention. An enchantment of some kind, perhaps.

I am not a fan of heat and humidity, as you probably know.  Tropical Storm Andrea brought both, and the air is thick.  At sunrise and sunset, this creates some amazing light.

It was one of those humid days when the atmosphere gets confused.  Sitting on the porch, you could feel it:  the air wishing it was water.

It was foggy this morning.  I was supposed to show you that, too, but I’m still caught up in yesterday’s sunset when M and I sat on the deck watching the sparkle and shimmer of the light in the grasses and behind the trees.  The shadows and silhouettes joined the dance, providing contrast and relief.  All that light can be blinding.  Sometimes the eyes need to rest in the shadows.

It would not be too difficult to imagine that there were elves and fairies out there, too.

I think I see a fairy trying to peer around the tree.

That’s about it from the Wabi-Sabi Ranch for this hot and humid Sunday.  I hope your weekend was sprinkled with light and shadows, play and pauses.

  1. Probably the most dignified wild turkey I have ever seen. And your rabbit header took my surprise. On our bike ride today I bet I saw 25 or more rabbits. Not to mention the 25000 chipmunks. Adrenaline Pumpers is what they are, when they dart in front of you!

    1. LOL! Adrenaline Pumpers is a great name for those little critters, CM. I’ve almost taken a spill or two (or three or four) because of chipmunks. I think they do it on purpose, and then go back and laugh about it with their fellow chipmunks. 😉

      1. As long as you don’t do too much “fixing up” Wabi-sabi is an aesthetic to be appreciated and enjoyed. 🙂

  2. It’s so much fun to play with the light of the day, the light of the seasons and sometimes even the lack of light, just to see what your camera sees. You and your camera are great partners, Robin. And I agree, watching nature is far more entertaining than watching TV. We have wild turkeys at out place too, they are called Bush Turkeys and they build the most interesting nests, which is actually a huge high mound of sticks and leaves. Look out around Wabi-Sabi Ranch and you may even find one there. 🙂

    1. That’s interesting, Joanne! I did find a big nest like that in a tree near the graveyard. I also found a large feather under it, and wondered what lived up there. I bet it’s the turkey. 🙂

  3. Who would have thought that light and humidity would dance together to form such beautiful photos? Wondering just HOW the humidity changes the quality of light. OK, one of those unanswerables, probably. Are you enjoying living in your new place?

    1. I think the humidity adds a sparkle and softness to the light, Kathy. HOW it does that is beyond me. You may be right. It’s one of those unanswerables.
I have my good days and bad days and in-between days but for the most part, the answer is yes. I’m enjoying living in my new place. 🙂

  4. You have posted some very lovely photographs. My favourite is definitely the first one. It really shows what the quote by Arlo Guthrie is all about.

  5. Although humidity is a bear to be in, it certainly adds a mystical quality to pictures! Your photographs are always stunning, and we readers reap the benefits of all you have to go through to get them. Your bunny picture is just plain charming!

    1. Thank you so much, Becky. 🙂 Bunnies are almost always just plain charming (except when they get in the garden and devour half the vegetables!).
